BAYER HQ BERLIN/EN
Bayer HEADQUARTERS BERLIN
Following the satisfactory result of the completed Baykomm Communication Center in Leverkusen, Rötzel Studio got invited again to join the competition for the extensive refurbishment of Bayers´s Berlin Headquarter. The impressive building was originally designed by Kiemle, Kreidt & Partner and completed in the mid 70ies, while its interior has suffered from several rather short-sighted subsequent adjustments in the recent decades. Therefore the main focus was on any architectural measures which could restore the unity and integrity of the interior while adding a contemporary feel to it. The design intents to keep the original identity-generating features while adding a calm and more pleasant touch to it by using natural materials such as oak veneer and soft carpets. The new architectural arrangements are carefully positioned into the circulation spaces, embracing or hiding some of the existing columns and rather “float” in the main horizontal visitor flow. The original scope was to redesign the existing entrance area, foyer, cantine, cafe and the large boardroom while Rötzel Studio additionally suggested to transform the two major courtyards into outdoor recreation areas.
