baykomm
Bayer´s Communication Center, known as Baykomm, is situated in the Chempark in Leverkusen adjacent to the Bayer AG Headquarter. It has been open to the public since 1991. Following a competition in 2015, the exhibition area of the building was redesigned. From the very beginning of the competition phase through to the project´s completion in September 2016, Rötzel Studio was responsible for the architectural design commissioned by Stuttgart based spatial communication agency Milla & Partner. All architectural measures followed the team´s initial idea to create not only a contemporary brand-exhibition-space but simultaneously a multifunctional communication hub - a center for Bayer customers, partners and employees alike, representing the brand as a "Life Science Company" in an open and transparent way.
BUILD-UP
This openness and transparency was to become palpable in all aspects of the new architectural layout and design. To this aim, the existing interior walls were removed, allowing for an unobstructed view into the beautiful surrounding Japanese Garden. Four columns remained, bearing the large roof light and marking the central area of the layout. Emphasized by lowering the floor, this Agora has become the heart of the Baykomm, a multi-purpose meeting place. Glass cubes, the so called InfoSpaces, are arranged around the Agora and feature exhibition- and meeting-functions. They zone the entire space into different themed areas. With their lightness and transparency, they contribute to an open interplay between in- and outside.
